Library

The library offers a quiet place to work and study.  If you wish to hear recordings of previous lectures, this can be arranged in advance.  For your convenience, we have a photocopier and Internet access.  The library contains German and English works on the following subject areas:

-  All the works of Marie-Louise von Franz in German and English
-  Alchemy and Hermeticism
-  History of Religion with emphasis on Gnosis, Egyptology and Greek mythology

C.G. Jung, Letters to Hedy Wyss (1936 – 1956)

C.G. Jung’s letters to the artist and analysand Hedy Wyss, published here for the first time, are a unique testimony to Jung’s vivid and sparkling spirit. Here we encounter the lively, compassionate and deeply human side of Jung’s nature. He writes neither scientifically nor cautiously, but quite spontaneously out of his respective state of mind. He mentions his suffering from various physical ailments to Hedy Wyss, such as heart troubles and rheumatism.  At the same time he struggles for the integrity of the analytical relationship and the veracity of love. 

Jung wrote his most important works during the twenty years of their correspondence, concluding with Mysterium Coniunctionis. Accordingly, in many of his letters to Hedy Wyss, hidden references to the problems he wrestled with at any given time can be found throughout these works. As a result, the content of Jung’s letters required a comprehensive commentary. Alongside Jung’s works,  a private manuscript written by Hedy Wyss, in which, years after his death, she looked back on her encounters with “C.G.” or the “Old Sage” as she liked to call him, furthered understanding of many details in the letters. These sources give us a unique insight into C.G. Jung’s singular approach as a researcher and analyst.

     This volume presents the journal notes of Sabi Tauber, a young Swiss woman who recorded the experience of her encounters with C.G. Jung. She conscientiously noted Jung’s responses to her questions and his comments on her dreams, mostly related to love, the creative principle, and the shadow.

In the years 1951-1961, Sabi Tauber often visited Jung in Küsnacht and in his secluded tower in Bollingen. Jung also went to her home in Winterthur a few times, where he spontaneously explained his views in the circle of the Tauber family and their friends.

A reader today will immediately be touched by C.G. Jung’s living spirit, just as Sabi Tauber was then. While addressing her personal situation, Jung also repeatedly points to the archetype that he recognizes behind each problem. In this way, the scientific precision of Jung’s thoughts is imbued with a unique feeling quality.

    For the house of wisdom that already exists in the beyond – in the unconscious – to truly manifest within an individual human being, the whole of a person is required, along with all their four psychic functions of consciousness. This encounter with wholeness – with the divine – is a shocking event that leaves both parties – the human and the divine – renewed. The cover image of this volume portrays precisely this kind of event. It was painted by a Sicilian artist, Antonello da Messina (15th century) and it depicts L’Annunciata, The Annunciation of Mary, the fateful moment in which Mary encounters the Archangel Gabriel and becomes aware of her destiny. The angel is not depicted; we see only Mary and the shock she experiences in her encounter with the divine.

The essays in this volume by Marie-Louise von Franz, Rivkah Schärf Kluger, Gotthilf Isler, and Laurel Howe revolve around this encounter. They detail the possible union of the opposites – the divine with the human, the feminine with the masculine, the demonic with the redemptive. Ultimately, they are all about a new godimage in which the feminine – Wisdom in its feminine form – is united with the masculine. This development has been in the making within the collective unconscious for centuries and it wants to become a reality in our time.

    The accompanying frontispiece of this publication shows two masons engaged in placing the capstone on a building. Above this stone is the word “lapis” indicating the alchemical stone. To the alchemists, the lapis was infinitely precious. It healed illnesses, brought about miracles, endowed long life, but it was so mysterious and puzzling that they ascribed to it an endless number of names, and could only describe it through paradoxes. In psychological terms, it is an image of the Self, for the completeness or wholeness within us; in other words, for that never-to-be quite-realized mysterious inner value that embraces all parts of one’s personality, even the minor, unsightly and despised aspects. Therefore, to the lapis and the alchemical process always belongs the encounter with the dark sides of one’s own personality. The contributions in this volume, published on the occasion of the centennial of the Psychology Club Zurich (1916-2016), are committed to such wholeness. They encompasses a wide spectrum of Jungian psychology: dreams, fairy tales, alchemy, Kabbalah, the ancient Chinese Book of Changes (the I Ching), as well as Jung’s exploration of the Judeo-Christian Godimage, and include previously unpublished works of C.G. Louise von Franz, Niklaus von Flüe and Saint Perpetua
A Psychological Interpretation of their Visions

This volume heralds translations of Marie-Louise von Franz’ works never before available in English. It explores the profound visions of the 15th century Swiss saint Niklaus von Flüe, and of the 3rd century martyr Perpetua. Niklaus von Flüe had the most impressive visions all through his life and was held in the highest esteem by both C.G. Jung and Marie-Louise von Franz. Jung even declared him the Patron Saint of Psychotherapy, due to the Saint’s deep inward reflections and profound inner experiences. Von Franz’ work on Saint Perpetua’s visions was originally published in German together with Jung’s first edition of Aion (1952).
  

Nan Savage Healy, Toni Wolff & C.G. Jung: A Collaboration

Toni Wolff was Jung’s primary collaborator during the formative years of his psychological investigations, yet she remains virtually unknown. Independently, Wolff was a scholar in her own right, creating an original model of the feminine psyche. This book examines her landmark essay, “Structural Forms of the Feminine Psyche”, along with others—mostly unknown—together with personal letters, archival documents, impressions from her family, insights from Wolff’s personal diaries, historic photographs and statements made by Wolff and Jung themselves.

Liz Greene, The Astrological World of Jung’s Liber Novus

These two works by Liz Greene provide a comprehensive insight into the sources from which Jung drew. The early Renaissance, now dated back to the 12th Century, opened up a whole body of magical, alchemical and astrological texts together with others from the Jewish and Islamic world. Liz Greene shows in a fascinating way how Jung made use of these works and how he often reinterpreted them. This opens up a totally new perspective on Jung's creative work.
